How to Wash Graphic Tees So the Print Lasts for Years

Most printed tees fade or crack because of heat and friction, not age. These 7 washing and drying steps keep a graphic tee's print sharp for years.

Here's how to wash graphic tees so the print lasts: turn it inside out, wash it in cold water on a gentle cycle, and air dry it or tumble dry on low. Heat and friction are what crack and fade a printed design, so almost every tip below comes back to those 2 things. Here's the full routine, step by step, and the mistakes that ruin a favourite shirt fastest.

Why graphic tee prints crack and fade

A printed design sits on or in the fibres of the shirt. Whatever the printing method, the print is more fragile than the cotton around it.

  • Heat softens ink and adhesive, and it shrinks cotton. When the fabric shrinks and the print doesn't, the print cracks.
  • Friction from other clothes, zips and the drum of the machine wears the surface of the print away.
  • Harsh chemicals like chlorine bleach break down pigments and fade colours.

Fix those 3 and a good print will outlive the shirt's fabric.

How to wash graphic tees: 7 steps

1. Wait before the first wash

Many print shops suggest waiting at least 24 hours after a shirt arrives before its first wash. It gives the print time to fully settle.

2. Turn it inside out

This is the single biggest habit. Inside out, the print faces away from the drum and other clothes, so it takes far less abrasion.

3. Wash cold

Use cold water, 30°C / 86°F or below. Cold water is gentler on the ink, reduces shrinking, and gets everyday clothes clean with modern detergents.

4. Choose a gentle or delicate cycle

A shorter, slower cycle means less tumbling and less friction.

5. Wash with similar clothes

Keep printed tees away from jeans, towels and anything with zips, hooks or Velcro. Heavy fabrics act like sandpaper on a print.

6. Use a mild detergent, and skip chlorine bleach

A regular liquid detergent is fine. Avoid chlorine bleach entirely. If you need to lift a stain on a light shirt, a non-chlorine (oxygen) bleach is the safer choice.

7. Air dry, or tumble dry on low

Hanging a tee to dry, or laying it flat, is the kindest option. If you use a dryer, choose the low heat setting and take the shirt out while it's still slightly damp. High heat is the most common cause of a cracked print.

Care instructions at a glance

Do Avoid
Turn inside out Washing print-side out
Cold water, gentle cycle Hot washes
Mild detergent Chlorine bleach
Air dry or low tumble High-heat drying
Iron inside out, around the print Ironing directly on the design
Wash with similar lightweight clothes Washing with jeans and zips

Always check the care label too. For example, our Slow Mornings Better Days tee is combed ring-spun cotton, and its care label says: machine wash cold, non-chlorine bleach only, tumble dry low, and no dry cleaning.

How to iron a graphic tee

Turn the shirt inside out and iron on a medium setting. Never run the iron directly over the print: heat can melt or smear it and leave residue on the iron. If the design itself needs smoothing, put a thin cloth or baking paper between the iron and the print.

A handheld steamer is an easy alternative. It relaxes wrinkles without pressing hot metal onto the design.

How to keep a white or light tee bright

  • Wash whites and light colours together, separately from darks.
  • Treat stains early with a little detergent rubbed in, before the stain sets.
  • Use an oxygen bleach for whitening, never chlorine.
  • Dry in shade rather than strong sun if you're hanging it outside, as strong sunlight can fade printed colours over time.

Can you fix a cracked print?

Light surface cracking can sometimes be calmed by turning the shirt inside out and pressing it with a warm (not hot) iron through a cloth, which can soften and re-bond the ink. Deep cracks and peeling can't be reversed. Prevention is the fix: cold water, inside out, low heat.

If a shirt arrives from us with a printing fault, like cracked ink or wrong placement, that's on us. Our returns policy covers misprints and damage within 30 days, and you don't need to post the faulty shirt back.

How the printing method affects care

Different printing methods behave a little differently in the wash. Direct-to-garment ink soaks into the cotton and feels soft; direct-to-film transfers sit on top as a flexible layer; screen-printed ink is thick and durable. The routine above suits all 3. FAQ

Should you wash graphic tees inside out?

Yes. Washing inside out keeps the print away from the drum and other clothes, which is the main source of friction that fades and cracks a design.

Can you put a graphic tee in the dryer?

You can, on the low heat setting. High heat is the most common cause of cracked prints and shrinking, so air drying is better when you have the time.

Does cold water clean clothes properly?

For everyday wear, yes. Modern detergents are designed to work in cold water, and cold washes are gentler on prints and colours.

How do you keep a shirt print from cracking?

Avoid heat and friction: wash inside out in cold water, skip chlorine bleach, dry on low or hang dry, and never iron directly on the print.
